The Best Robot Hoover

Both the Q5 and the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our bare floor tests They're also particularly adept at cleaning pet hair. However, they do have a few flaws however, which hinder them from being our first choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate through rooms with a lot of people efficiently during our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

It's still a good value for those whose office or home has lots of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also quiet and works while you're at work or at school. The only thing it lacks that you don't get in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with an auto-emptying dock, however. If you want to change the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that also has the ability to mop floors. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it easy to clean and efficient in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with self-emptying dustbins, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robotic hoover for carpets, but it falls behind some competitors in terms of deep cleaning.

It did a decent cleaning job on different flooring and rooms with different flooring types including certain area rug. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds and cables.

It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after it vacuums, a feature that we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This mop and vacuum combination has a sleek, circular design that appears more like a regular Roomba unit than the boxy units of the competition. It's among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It comes with advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot cleaner that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our tests due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is easy to use. It has an intuitive mobile application interface, and it integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that the X40 still a loud unit. This can be a problem in mornings before work, or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are similarly capable and look better. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable, but it will cost you more and create more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features that let you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multifunction dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to create floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than some of its premium competitors. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and could be confused with power cords or obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the home based on how dirty the areas are.

If you have a larger home, you should consider selecting a model with a spot or zone cleaning mode. This allows you to instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned using the app or voice command. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also useful. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that permits your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be extremely useful.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you would expect from its price tag. It is a great job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad, which uses an oscillating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a fully-featured app as well as a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you mark on the map. You can use it to make cleaning schedules, set up an area for cleaning or to prioritize your most filthy rooms to ensure better performance.
