Toward the suburbs are a few handsome and costly residences, built of wood, which have been erected within the past three or four years. But what proof that Californians are pre-eminent in this way? Californians gave liberally during the late rebellion - but in obedience to an impulse of patriotism - while others, in obedience to that same impulse, gave more, and sent their sons and brothers to the war.

Yet we do not mean to imply that Californians will become ungenerous ; for we submit that they have not yet done any thing to vindicate a claim above other peoples to an enlarged or characteristic generosity. Upon such premises must rest San Francisco's claim to the possession of energy.
