Best for Carpet

If you have carpeting, select one that has a high score for carpet and rug ability to maneuver and pick up. Many models do a decent job of removing dust that has been embedded in carpets with a low pile and a few do a good job of cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws and pet hair. They don't pick-up fine particles like an upright canister, and they may miss dirt close to baseboards or thresholds.

Best for Hard Floors

Robot vacuums are the best choice for hardwood floors, as they can navigate around obstacles easily without damaging the surfaces that are not. They are great for removing dust and crumbs but struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They don't have the suction of the top canister or upright vacuum, which makes them a poor choice for deep house cleaning robot upholstery or carpeted areas.

The most effective two-in-one robots incorporate mopping and vacuum, taking care of an entire task in one go. Find models that have an onboard sensor to detect changes in the floor's texture and adjust suction in line with the changes.
