1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. Both robots are adept at picking up surface dirt on floors and carpets, and they can easily maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that assist the i3+ to navigate and clean up efficiently. The i3+ isn't able to feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or other top-rated robots we tested. It could be stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces like rug and hardwood.

iRobot recommends clearing areas that the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, and include clearing out any clutter or toys it may come across. It's also recommended to keep the bin and filter clear so they aren't clogged by dirt. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is depleted, it returns to the docking station and automatically empties the dirt into the station's external dustbin. It then continues cleaning from where it began. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for about an hour and a half continuous use, and takes about three hours to fully recharge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in the iRobot flagship line, and it comes with all the latest features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and -- the most important feature of all -- it comes with self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, which allows it to identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and you can direct your robot using the app or via voice.

In our tests the i7+ was more agile and faster than our runner-up and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it picked up large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces types including carpeting. Its biggest advantage over the eufy, though it self-empties its dust bin which eliminates a major cause of maintenance and reduces recurring costs.

We were also impressed by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning session, move itself around the room cleaning robot and vacuum a specific space. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and easy with the iRobot Home app. Once connected, we were able to use the i7+'s voice commands like "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and monitoring performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is a sports car in a world of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It's powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in most homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its sophisticated whole-machine filtration system captures allergens and expels clean air back into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles that penetrate deep into carpets and pick up large dust or crumbs. It comes with three suction modes to match the task being performed. It is able to quickly change between handheld and floor vacuum and vice versa.

This model has a dock which charges the Dyson to 100% in 3.5 hours. It also offers easy access to 2 attachments as well as an wand. This is a big improvement over earlier Dysons, which take a long time to charge and are a pain to store.

The main issue with the V10 is its limited running time. The tests conducted by CR show that its advertising claims of up to 60 minutes are not true. It was able to remove all kinds of debris in our tests, and frequently went over the same area multiple times to ensure an efficient clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach corners and the edges of walls.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it lacks the mapping capability of more advanced models like our top picks and the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. As a result, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't in good condition, and frequently will run out of battery before making it back to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694 in that it has less parts that require regular cleaning, is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower cost of recurring costs, has more advanced automation capabilities and is better able to navigate itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The app makes it possible to manually steer the robot when needed. My living room rug for instance has a dark-colored border that could cause trouble for other robots.
