Evolution Korea

Until recently the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so could boost the credibility of the group. The silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. But this is merely one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which could result in variations in genes or entire genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. As time passes, this difference in reproduction may lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The term "evolution", which comes from Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species transformed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist student who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species evolve into different species in a gradual and predictable way.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living organisms develop traits that increase their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and also special creation and consider their views to be "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." The theory suggests that God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will create new species that are identical to the original species.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were all created simultaneously, and that they developed slowly afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution, too.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology found that half did not believe evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved many things through its lectures and seminar events. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and 무료 에볼루션 its members have given talks on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
