Evolution Korea

For a long time, the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. However, this is just one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which may result in changes to genes or even whole genomes. Over time the changes could result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with traits that are advantageous can reproduce faster and longer than those with less advantageous traits. Over time, this differential reproduction could result in the creation of completely new species.

The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species transformed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can cause a population develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as increases in muscle mass due to diet or exercise cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not inherited by future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific tests, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. It is essential for scientists to advocate for the teaching of evolution. In some countries, the opposition to evolution has been rising. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit the teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbooks to include content on the evolutionary history of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reason for this is many different reasons. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries that can lead to the development of new medicines and other treatments, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a deep faith in God and seek to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Although some creationists are not Christian, they are a majority. Creationists generally fall in one of two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most popular type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.

Both types of creationism reject the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is a position that is backed by a variety of professional organizations, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. Its next target is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that a majority of them didn't believe in evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of a few thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
