WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades will give you a boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases item level by +3. A random additional substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more useful, unless the item is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll to get a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be made on any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities, and can be visited at any time to upgrade your gear. It is recommended to visit the upgrader every few weeks, to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item, however, they are always less expensive than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. If you purchase a similar item, it will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor using an button, which will display a preview of the Best item upgrade at its next upgrade level if the player has sufficient materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the item slot and current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item level upgrade is upgraded to a certain amount, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Upgraders for items are available in a variety of locations, including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and the chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades must be acquired through a variety of means which is both an improvement as well as a disadvantage.

In Season 3, several new features have been added to the upgrade system. When a player has an upgrade to a particular level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading additional items to that same Best item upgrade level will cost less even if they belong to a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is cut as well, but is only available when certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

Players have several options when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an important component of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests can only be used on gear of a specific rank, and every rank has different requirements for its upgrade path. The simplest and easiest upgrade item costs 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, contingent on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for gear that is used in the endgame. These crests can then be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to get the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it does bring some changes to the upgrade process. For example, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another notable modification is that crests have one use, so it's important to use them wisely. For instance it's a good idea to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the top equipment available and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you plan to make. This is especially true for items like rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character, that will be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all of the slots are filled with high-quality equipment.
