How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A robot vacuum can help you save time and effort in the case of regular touch-ups. The top models do a great job at removing dust and light debris and many allow you to designate no-go zones in pet areas or power cords.

The higher-end models even sweep your floors--though they still can't climb the stairs. Find models with smart mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

The best robots we tried were user-friendly, efficient and able to keep up with daily debris. You'll also need a robot that can handle stairs and that has decent pick-up power on carpets. If you're looking for a model with extra features, consider a model that has smart mapping technology, or an app to control it remotely.

She's a fan of the robotic vacuums that offer the greatest convenience, such as self-emptying bins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill water tanks for mopping robots. She also likes the robots that can recognize landmarks like furniture legs and power cords, so they don't get tripped up when climbing the stairs.

This robot from Black and Decker has a lower score for navigation and less object-avoidance tech than the best-rated models. However, it has an enormous dust bin that doesn't require frequent emptying, and has a long battery life. Additionally, it has an option that allows you to plan cleaning times and return to the spot where it last stopped and makes it much easier to cover larger homes. This model is also a good option for pet owners since it can spot and prevent tangled hair as well as fallen food particles.

In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined the LIDAR (light) sensor which can map rooms and detect obstacles with a structured-light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. It can stay clear of the steps, liquid droplets and furniture legs easily with this combination. It also has the ability to save up to four floor plans for future use. This robot is not as efficient in cleaning as our top models, but it excels at picking up heavier items like orzo pasta, metal screws, and fine debris such as sand. The only downside is that it's not able to mop, and has a less impressive navigation system.

The best option for Carpet

If you have carpeting, select one that has a high score for rug and carpet ability to maneuver and pick up. A lot of models do a great job of picking up dust that is embedded in carpets with low pile and some are capable of picking up heavier debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws, and pet hair. However, they can't handle fine particles as well as an upright or canister vacuum and may also miss ground-in dirt close to baseboards and thresholds.

The best value robot vacuum choice for most carpeted areas is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop, which lets you swap in the cleaning bin as well as mopping pad with damp. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robotic vacuum/mop that is able to clean and mop simultaneously with circular pads that spin at 200 rotations a minute. If you're looking for a modern model, you can look at the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It comes with a huge dock that can last for weeks without needing to be emptied. It also has impressive ability to navigate and auto-empty on carpets and bare floors. It's also got a smart-mapping system and can be programmed to operate at certain times of the day (a useful feature that can keep children and pets who are prone to mischief from causing havoc). The Shark isn't as powerful as other mop/robot combination models however it does pick up pet hair and hair extremely well. It's also the highest value of our top choices.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are the best option for hardwood floors since they can easily maneuver around obstacles without damaging surfaces that are not bare. They are excellent for removing dust and crumbs but struggle with pet hair and larger debris. They lack the suction power of the top canister or upright vacuum, which makes them unsuitable for deep cleaning upholstery or carpeted areas.

The most effective robots are two-in-one, combining the power of a mop with a vacuum to complete the task in one step. If you have mixed flooring you should look for models equipped with an onboard sensor that detects changes in the automatic floor cleaners's texture and adjusts suction accordingly. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ for example, has this feature and can move seamlessly from soft to hard carpeting.

If your home is primarily composed of hardwood floors, consider an automated vacuum and mop combination like the eufy S1 Pro. This model has an impressive robotic vacuum that has smart navigation that can clean hardwood and other surfaces. It also mop. Its sensors assist it in avoiding the stairs and other hazards, so you don't need to worry about the robot falling down the stairs and breaking your hardwood.

The Eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, rather than simply swab them to get rid of dirt and dust. The mop pads that are reusable reduce waste, make it less likely to spread germs and can be cleaned at the docking station, saving your time. The mop pads can also be cleaned and dried to avoid spreading mold.

The robovac is operated by your smartphone, making it easier to use. You can, for example utilize the app to create no-go zones where the vacuum cannot be allowed to enter, label different rooms and schedule specific cleaning sessions. The eufy S1 Pro has an auto-emptying port that collects debris via trapdoors and then puts it in a bag-less or disposable bin. This means you don't need to empty the bin manually as often as with other models.

Best for Small Spaces

These robots are specifically designed to work in small spaces. They have smaller bins that can hold less waste, and they're more efficient than larger models when it comes to navigating tight corners. They can also be tucked under furniture, where the bigger robots struggle to reach. They are generally less expensive than the higher-end models however, you'll need to empty them manually from their dirt bins at end of each cleaning session.

A few years ago, robot vacuums underwent a major transformation as manufacturers began adding sensors to help them navigate and avoid household objects that their conventional sensors would get stuck on or run over. These advancements have reduced the number of times our testers had to clean up after a robotic snag, whether it was a power cord, a toy, or piece of pet waste.

However, the new sensors haven't resolved all of these machines' problems. The less expensive models are not able to traverse the same obstacles as the older models, and they require a certain level of light in order to know where they are moving. You should consider an option that incorporates an LIDAR spinning unit that is mounted on top to create maps of the area. Our top model and the runners-up do this. This lets them stay clear of stairs and other obstacles when working in darkness.

The models can also be programmed to use their cliff sensors when they are near or on the ground, but not when they are above it. It is still recommended to shield any mirrors that may interfere with this function though, as the laser used by a LIDAR-based model could bounce off reflective surfaces and cause the robot to think it is in another room.
