If there's something I love about London is the city's endless treasure collection of vintage and retro finds. London is the perfect place to find a unique gift for birthdays or a retro present for Christmas, or something that is more meaningful than your typical high-end set.

Vintage markets are among my most beloved weekend rituals. Portobello Road always tops my list, not only for its vibrant riot of colour, but also for the sheer variety. You can find everything from mid-century homewares and enamel kitchen tins, to classic vinyl records that still crackle with life. I've lost count of the occasions I've left with "just one small present" which turned into a complete bag of treasures.

For something more refined, I usually go to Shoreditch and Islington. There are boutique vintage shops in these areas that specialize in certain eras. For instance there's a shop that specializes on 1940s fashion and another which focuses on 1970s lighting. It's the sort of browsing experience that leaves you talking to the proprietor of the shop for about half an hour about the history of a lamp, or the origins of a leather satchel.

Mixing the old and the new is a part of the fun. I often mix a vintage home decor webpage with contemporary packaging or fresh flowers to give it a modern appearance. It's a great way give something old a new feel while still honoring its roots.

London has a wide range of fairs that are seasonal. They are particularly popular during Christmas. The Southbank Winter Market, as and a variety pop-up vintage markets, combine the joy of Christmas with stalls selling special and unique gifts. I'm never left empty handed, and I often leave with a present for myself.
