If there's one thing I love about London is the city's endless treasure collection of vintage and retro treasures. Whether you're searching for an unusual birthday present or a retro Christmas present, or something that's more personal than a traditional gift set, London is a dream for anyone who appreciates the quaintness of the past.

Vintage markets are among my most beloved weekend rituals. Portobello Road always tops my list, not just because of its colourful chaos but also for the variety of items available. You can find everything, from mid-century homeware to enamel kitchen tins for the kitchen and classic vinyl records that are still alive. I'm not sure how many occasions when I've received "just one gift" that turned into a whole bag of treasures.

For example there's a store that specializes on 1940s fashion and another that focuses on lighting from the 1970s. It's the kind of browsing experience where you'll end up chatting to the shop owner for an hour or so about the story of a lamp's history or the history of a satchel made of leather.

I always ensure authenticity when buying retro-themed gifts. A maker's mark, original labels, or even a bit of wear and tear can make a difference to the overall look of the gift. London's antique dealers are usually willing to share the story behind the item. This story is usually included in the present. Imagine handing over an old scarf that traveled across Europe in the 1950s, or a typewriter which tapped out love letters years ago. It can transform the gift into a part of history.
