For instance, the Q5's navigation doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

However, it's a good choice for those who want to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and can work while you're at work, or going to school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming of floors with no floor. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't stay on for long and don't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you have to, you can swap the mopping pad to dry ones in a matter of minutes.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact sleek and stylish vacuum cleaner that can mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as fluid navigation make it simple to clean and effective in dealing with larger particles, like pet hair. It can clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is something we haven't seen on other robotic vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination is sleek and has a circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy units of the competition. It's one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It has advanced features, like Enhanced Dirt Detection as well as future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the sole robot vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and boasts an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to operate. It has a simple mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and identify obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its more expensive rivals. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection, although this wasn't quite reliable in our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner comes with an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also comes with an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home based on how dirty these areas are.

If you own a larger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with zones or spot cleaning modes. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned by using the app or voice control. If you have lots of furniture, a stair mode is also useful. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to organize a spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for greater efficiency.
