Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a great source of damage, more AD or even more attaches.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to the more modernized Common or Magic gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a form of upgrade that can be used on armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item level upgrade they are attached to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. Alternatively, they can also be rescued from items with upgrade items components within them by using an expert or greater salvage kit.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to take on. The absorption of damage by a piece armor will increase when it is upgraded to its maximum upgrade level. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it must be more heavy.

There are several different types of armor upgrade available in the game. Each one has a distinct impact. For example, some upgrades give the armor a certain amount of health points while others will make it lighter and stronger. The name of the armor upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade an item can receive, as shown below.

Some upgrades also feature magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is shown by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees for use. They are referred to as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades change daily or never expire dependent on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest method to improve your armor. It can be found by exploring and looting small loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, but is readily available at the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high level armor pieces. These upgrades can give a significant increases in stats and are definitely worth the cost.

The player should be aware that upgrading a piece up to the maximum upgrade level will boost its defense. However, it will also reduce the speed and agility of the piece. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The added defense usually isn't worth the weight and power cost of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. For example an upgrade can improve the damage that is caused by shotgun shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Some weapons also have special upgrades that enhance their inherent qualities. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases the velocity of projectiles for greater damage).

The majority of upgrades to weapons require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These can be obtained by finishing side quests, taking out a certain number of bosses or monsters, or from the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

To upgrade the weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade, you must visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee that is a certain amount of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars are required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the method of upgrading your weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. You can still do this but the process is based on RNG and low on agency. It is better to purchase gear that has low upgrade levels, but high base scores and stat distributions. These items have a greater chance of granting you the highest level of blessings and perks.

To increase their level faster, many players prioritise upgrading their weapons. In addition to these players, they should think about upgrading the weapons favored by their teammates to make them more powerful as well. Shepard, for example should upgrade his M92F so that he can unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when used in conjunction with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are utilized in the armor's sockets and weapons, increasing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. The Jeweler can create the highest levels of gems except for the rare and legendary ones that you must be at a certain level to get. Jewels can be replaced by another jewel without damaging the original. However it is only possible to replace a jewel in a piece of equipment once.

It is typical to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. In addition to enhancing performance, the diamonds create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, which means that repeated friction with pivots doesn't damage them as easily.

A Glyphmaster can offer glyphs to improve the look of your shields and weapons. They offer a small benefit and are able to be swapped easily but aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also a scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, aren't swappable and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are items of equipment that provide a wide range of small but useful advantages to your hero. They can be acquired starting in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and through doing road interactions. They can be purchased from the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket that a player will unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but beneficial boost in speed of movement and the ability to evade. After that, they'll be able to purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player acquires armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment comes with an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be used in any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't fighting. This lets the hero perform better when they are not active and may also help to compensate for the absence of a solid team or any slots from the talent tree that would normally be filled with the hero's ideal stats.

As a general rule, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader in Slot) items that you aren't likely to replace soon. Then, you should consider any items with desirable statistics that aren't as important as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade since it's generally better to upgrade a single important stat rather than two sub-optimal ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinkets to a red trinket at the start of the game. Top and mid players however will pick a green or a pink ward, based on the matchup. These choices can impact the ability of a hero to control the map.

In addition to the items listed above, players can also discover other trinkets in form trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story, for instance finishing a chapter's main quest or destroying a boss.
