Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The macaw that is blue and gold is a stunning bird. Its stunning appearance is well-known. Its friendly personality makes it a wonderful companion for families. It is also a natural at interacting and can learn phrases and tricks quickly.

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds are ideally suited to families with a variety of members. They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners don't interact with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized can become aggressive and even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw representative species does feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that are a joy to play with, interact with and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. They are not only a wonderful pet, but they are is also a great companion for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They can be heard making ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or near children who might be startled by their noise.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means males and females are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only method to determine the sex. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita would have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor in a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and bond with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Training

Lolita's Diet

As is the case with any animal species, a captive gold and blue spix macaw lifespan's health is contingent on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food items, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. In the wild, a macaw that is well-fed is likely to live up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is evident, Lolita's health continues to deteriorate. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups who wish to see her returned into the wild. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 and has been a major tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile condition.

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.

It is not known what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor is not required to divulge the information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the death of captive orcas.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where to buy a miniature macaw for sale (go!!) she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale, which died on Friday as a result of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
