Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the traditional sextet style, and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out shortly after, and the group went on a long-distance tour in support of the album. In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before.
