Path of Exile Item Upgrading

The ability to upgrade items allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Items that have weak bases, such as rings can be upgraded to a stronger base. Items with strong bases, like eth Titans have little change in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor, trinkets and gathering tools, providing an attribute bonus or additional effect when the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as a reward for missions or chests. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.

In order to upgrade an item of armor, the player has to choose it and click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. The screen will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade statistics and the components or materials required for the upgrade.

There are three types that are universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which comprise gems, are able to be used in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions, which can only be placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment, are the same as jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be used in any other equipment.
