Path of Exile Item Upgrades

item upgrading upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment is usually superior to the more modernized Common or Magic equipment due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item that they're attached to. Upgrades to armor are available in the game's world and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kits to recover upgrade components from items.

The amount of damage an armored item upgrade or weapon can absorb depends on the level of its upgrades. The absorption of damage by an item of armor will increase when it's upgraded to the highest upgrade level. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it should be heavier.

There are a few different types of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have different effects. For instance, certain upgrades will give the armor a certain number of additional health points, while others will make it stronger and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade an item upgrading can be given, as illustrated below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which are indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table. Certain upgrades require charges for use. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out by a different jewel of the same type without damaging it. However you can only swap out a jewel in an item of equipment only once.

Using more jewels in a movement can make it feel more comfortable, and is often used to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Jewels also enhance performance and make a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These provide a small bonus and can be swapped out at any time however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are upgradeable, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis aren't swappable and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are pieces of equipment that bestow a wide range of small but useful benefits to your hero. You can find them in the starting area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They are also available from vendors as well as through doing road interaction. They can also be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.
