Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Items with weak bases, like rings can be upgraded to a stronger base. Items with bases that are strong, such as the Titans of eth have little changes in their stats.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute bonus or extra effect, while the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, thrown away by enemies or received as a reward from missions or chests. Some upgrades can have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain point before they can be upgraded.

In order to upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the player has to select it, and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview of the expected upgrade statistics and the components or materials required for the upgrade.

There are three types: universal upgrades (which include gems) prefix upgrades and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, like gems, are able to be put on any type of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type restriction. Infusions are only placed in ascended gear or legendary equipment, are the same as gems, but offer higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades, which can be placed in gathering tools, will add their names to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding a Glyph to a Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools when a player swaps one glyph with a different one, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component, it will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions, which can be swapped freely.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from earlier versions. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item can be upgraded a certain number of times before it is "leveled out." The cost for upgrades is increased with each level however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to focus their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of these items, instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

This will enable the item to receive new upgrade components and a higher chance of success. This bonus is called the Artisan’s Energy and it resets at 0 if the upgrade fails or increases if the upgrade succeeds.

When a piece of equipment is upgraded to its highest level it is able to receive affixes that will enhance its capabilities. The number of affixes available will depend on the item's base type. For instance, an uncommon or unique weapon that has a standard base will only have two affixes, whereas a legend armor will have eight affixes.

Each upgrade step requires a specific number of Flightstones or Crests, depending on the type of item upgrader kit at its current level, and in which slot it is in. Weapons will typically require more Flightstones than other equipment.

If an item doesn't reach its maximum level, the NPC grants players the option to transfer it to a different character and then re-infuse it with a different set or upgrades. This process can take up to two hours and will cost the same amount of materials. However it has a lower rate of success.

Engineers utilize a level to measure the height of the building against an established location, such as an existing benchmark. This method is known as a "level-loop." It involves taking readings with the backsight rod and level, then turning the level and making the foresight rod reading. This method makes sure that buildings are constructed to a high level of safety and accuracy.

Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of changing the upgrade components of an item. It is a crucial aspect of the game and can drastically enhance an item's strength or damage, as well as other attributes. This can be done through the item menu or clicking the Reroll button on an upgraded item upgrader. Rerolling items can be costly and should be done sparingly.

Reroll tokens are earned by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can be used to upgrade the original item, or to upgrade another similar item. Recyclable items have an indicator of the level which shows how much of the upgrade gauge has been filled. The amount of level that has been filled is based on the rarity and the upgrade cost of the item.

In the past, certain upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than other. This meant that you would be able to get the stats that were important most to your build more often than other items. This included things like the armor's total armor, thorns and duration reduction stats that are controlled or the weapon's bonus attack speed and critical strike chance.

This has changed since the last patch. Priority affixes have been removed and all upgrades will have the same chances of rolling for each stat. This could be good or bad, based on what you're looking to get from your equipment.

Each upgraded item could have a unique, fixed-value bonus that increases its strength by a certain percentage. These bonuses are added to the normal affixes. The more you upgrade an item, the better your chance of getting an exclusive bonus.

The game also comes with number sets that give a bonus when three or four upgraded items from the set are placed on an unit. This is a good method of giving the character more power without spending a ton of money.

Many players prefer to reroll their gear and weapons, especially in the early stages of the game. Rerolling is a method to get a more powerful character quicker, which enables players to advance in the game and reach higher levels.

Sets

Clicking the Upgrade button will display the attributes of the item as well as the necessary items needed to upgrade it.
