Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store on the Northwest Side. She began an investigation lasting 30 years that would change our understanding of the intelligence of birds. Alex's research challenged the common belief birds could only imitate human language, but not understand the meaning.

What is Alex?

While many people are impressed by the fact that Alex could learn so much however, some scientists have argued that it was unfair to compare Alex to humans in terms of intelligence. To teach Alex, Pepperberg and her assistants would enact scenarios involving the object they wanted him to learn about. This technique is known as the rival model and has become a common method of teaching animals.

In addition to his cognitive abilities, Alex was a friendly, playful companion who loved to interact with his owners. He was often an advisor and cheerleader in the training sessions. He would encourage his owners or remind them to do better. He was also very attentive and could sense the emotions of his human companions. He would leap into his owner's arms when she was happy and then cling to her leg when she was sad or upset.

What was Alex's influence like?

In the short time he lived, Alex changed the lives of many people. His legacy is an example of his perseverance and determination. In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues in the field of avian intelligence. Alex could sing more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions, was able to count objects up to six, and demonstrate math skills that were advanced for a bird at the time.

He was also able communicate with other animals by using sign language, and also had a good grasp of grammar. He used a method of training called "rival model," which involved two trainers demonstrating to the bird what they wanted it to learn. Trainers would frequently change positions to allow the bird to interact with both and receive attention from each.

Alex was named as a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able accomplish so much during his lifetime due to his strength of character, and his determination to live his life to the fullest.
