Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed as a double-album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad case of laryngitis which hampered his singing. Downes and the other original members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
