Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear by adding new affixes that boost its stats base or adding additional perks. To upgrade an Best item upgrade, the player needs to have it in their inventory and have access to the kiln.

Usually objects that have weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, whereas objects with strong bases, such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons, trinkets, and gathering tools. They provide an attribute bonus or additional effect, when the equipment is being used. They can be purchased from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies or received as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be above a certain level before they can be upgraded.

In order to upgrade the quality of a weapon or piece armor, the player has to select it and then click on the Upgrade button located in the toolbar. This will display a preview on the right side of the screen showing what the expected upgrade statistics will be, as well as the necessary element or material required to make that happen.

There are three kinds of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, can be placed on any type of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type limitation. Infusions are jewels that can only be used in legendary and ascended equipment. They offer the same bonuses as jewels, but cannot be used in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add the suffix at the end of item names. For example adding a Glyph would make the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.

In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with a different one the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component, it will be destroyed, with the exception for the inscriptions, which are able to be swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from earlier versions. Gear is now categorised in tracks and each item can be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level however, the materials needed do not increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a handful of important items to maximize their impact, instead of spreading the upgrade costs across multiple pieces.

Engineers employ a level to compare the height of the building against an established point, such as an existing benchmark. This process is called a "level loop." This involves taking readings using the level, backsighting rod and Item upgrading then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. Rerolling

Rerolling is the process of changing the upgrade components of an item. It is an essential part of the game that can increase the damage, strength or other attributes. In the past, some upgrade items had priority affixes which made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you'd get the most crucial stats to your build more often than other items. Many players choose to reroll their equipment and weapons, especially in the early stages of the game. Rerolling is a way to gain a stronger character faster, allowing you to progress in the game and attain higher levels.

Sets

Upgrades to lower-level items of the set can increase their defense and make them more competitive in terms of damage.

To see if an item is worth upgrading, players must click the Upgrade button on their screen of their character. The item's attributes will be displayed together with any required items. For instance the No-mouth Face will require 1.1K Scrap Materials and 250 Enchanted Dust, and 5 Glowing Shards to upgrade. Players can also verify the upgrade requirements for specific items at the Cyrodiil Golden vendor or Leaderboard.

Generally speaking the jewelry and weapons have better trade value when fully upgraded than armor. Particularly, for weapons that feature spell/weapon damage glyphs, upgrading them to gold is recommended because it will result in a significant increase in their performance. The armor that has a new appearance will also benefit from this because its defense will increase when it goes from purple to gold.
