Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Upgrades to items are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of damage or more AD or even more attaches.

Sometimes, however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They improve the effectiveness of the item upgrader kit they are connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using a professional or higher salvage kits to salvage upgrades from the items.

The amount of damage a piece of armor or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the extent of its upgrades. Upgrading a piece of armor to the highest upgrade level will boost the damage it absorbs. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, therefore it should be heavier.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and each one has distinct effects. For example, some upgrades give the armor a certain number of additional health points, while others make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item upgrading will receive will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as shown in the table below.

Certain upgrades require magic or a combination of technology and magic, which is identified by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Certain upgrades require charges to use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are either updated daily or never expire based on the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest option to improve your armor. You can find it by exploring and looting small loot chests. Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of an weapon. For example, an upgrade may increase the damage dealt by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle that snipes. Certain weapons come with special enhancements to enhance their intrinsic characteristics. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes overheating of the weapon) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

Jewels

The Jeweler can create all kinds of gems, except for the rare and legendary ones which you must attain a certain level to get. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped by a different jewel of the same kind without destroying it. However you can only swap out one jewel in a piece of equipment once.

Using more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother and is typically used for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not damage them.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These provide a small bonus and can be swapped freely however they aren't guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and Scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components like aegis or traits cannot be exchanged and can only be retrieved through an upgrade extractor, or salvaging with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that offer an array of small, but beneficial benefits to your hero. You can find them in the starting area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They can also be obtained from vendors as well as through the completion of road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and then found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket that a player will unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny but beneficial boost in movement speed and the ability to evade. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player obtains weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has an upgrade slot that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels cannot be upgraded or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.

These trinkets grant additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This allows the hero to be more efficient when they are not active. It also helps compensate for the lack of a strong slots in the team or talent tree which would normally be filled by the hero's Best item upgrade stats.

In general, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best in Slot) items that you will not replace anytime soon. Then, you should consider any items with desirable stats that aren't as important as the iLevel of the item that is to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item Upgrader kit has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade as it's often more beneficial to upgrade one important stat than two sub-optimal ones.

At the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their yellow trinket to a red, while top and mid players will usually opt for a green or pink ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices will have a major impact on the hero's map control abilities.

In addition to the items listed above, players can also find other trinkets that form of rewards and trophies throughout the game. These can be obtained by completing certain milestones in the story, like completing a chapter's main quest or killing a particular boss.
