Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins and they have different functions but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. Check replacement key for audi a4 signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this.
