World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to items are a method to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it can boost the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and increase other stats.
Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests Each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specific amount.
Item Level
When an item is upgraded, its base stats increase in value. The value is the sum of all of an item level upgrade's leveled-up perks (attack magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high, depending on the upgrader you choose and the type of upgrade you choose to do. This is because of how many perks must be replaced to allow the item to be upgraded.
The level of an item is a popular measurement of power and is visible on all tooltips of items. It is also used as a gating requirement while waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is limited to a lower level). The average item level can be found in the character sheet.
When deciding to purchase or sell gear players can evaluate the item level. It's a good gauge of an item's worth and the amount of damage it's able to deal. The level of an item can be used to compare items when looking at the inventory of a seller.
The level of the item can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. The item level upgrade will be displayed with its full description, including ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are a variety of theories on how the item level is determined. One theory is that the level is a numerical value derived from a formula that determines the amount an item's stats are worth. It considers that different perks are valued differently, and that gems in sockets boost the value of the item. This can lead to an item's ilvl which is calculated and is often very close to Blizzard's actual item level.
However, this is not the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, as the level of the area the item dropped in can alter the value of its stats, such as by adding an amount to its haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have a higher value.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses a variety of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The base stats on a weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat mods which are then boosted by the player's level.
Item upgrades add to that by increasing certain stats of the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while an item with rare levels will be upgraded multiple times at higher prices.
Affixes are another way to change an item's stats. They are stat boosters that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes are used to give items extra damage, special capabilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs), item upgrader or to distinguish them by putting a name on them.
All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window pressing the green button. This process will cost the player a certain amount of gold as well as items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same way as the other options for rerolling.
Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll attaches. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the item level, but every item upgrading is guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the specified range, unless it is an exclusive item or an item that is a God roll from a raid boss.
Another thing that could be changed is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll the attachments, or pick which stats to boost. But, like base equipment, this would have to be done on a per-item basis and the item compare interface would not display all the possible stats gained or lost at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player increases the chance of finding items, the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives players a chance to upgrade their equipment in earlier waves and is therefore more beneficial in the early game as opposed to later ones, since most players prefer more powerful weapon scaling and Item Upgrader defenses over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the probability of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each level of the item and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to increase the value of 40 luck or to increase the luck of the item to 140.
Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any skill that deals damage by 5percent. These items can be found in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to boost the success rate of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it does not work.
The rate of success of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to how much success rates can be increased and the probability of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.
The luck of an item can affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has a base success rate of 25%, and each item with Luck increases that chance by five percent.
The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This can cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
