WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases item level by 3. A random additional substat is also added to every upgrade.

The more modernized gear generally has a more value in trade regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variation (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of armor or weapons. However, the item upgrader kit that is used for the upgrade will be consumed forever and will not be able to be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear current it is recommended you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current level of the gear being upgraded however, they will always be less expensive than buying new equipment from other sources. For Item Level Upgrade example, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points while buying a similar item from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, Item Level Upgrade armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will display the item's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot of the item and the current level of the item. For instance weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount as well as a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through various methods which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was modified a bit, and some new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading further items to that level will cost less even when they are part of a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is reduced as well, but is only available after certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

Players have several options for upgrading their gear in WoW. Flightstones are an option that is accessible to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are the main component of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be used to purchase equipment that is of a particular rank, and each rank has its own requirements for upgrading. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the more complex one requires as many as 20 crests, based on the type of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with any difficulty for higher-tier items or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. These crests can be exchanged with an upgrader for the Item Level upgrade like Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it does bring some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, when a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters, instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one purpose, so it's important to use them properly. For instance it's a good idea to use all of your Whelpling-rank crests on the best gear you have available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan on making. This is particularly true for items such as rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The discount on the account will only be applicable if all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality equipment.
