WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades can give you an increase in specific statistics. Each upgrade boosts the level of the item by +3. A random substat is also added to each upgrade.

The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade item gear to a higher level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the Item Level Upgrade will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every couple of weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current level of the item being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than purchasing new gear from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. If you purchase a similar item upgrade, it will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for tools, armor, weapon, and item level upgrade accessory upgrades. They can be bought by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any tool, weapon, Item Level Upgrade or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item and the current item level as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Item upgraders can be found in a variety of locations, including the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the chance to obtain an entirely new recipe. The discount for upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no item upgrader available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead, the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades are acquired via various methods, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was modified a bit, and several new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a certain level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading other items to that level will cost less even when they are part of another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones required for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is cut too, but it is only available when certain milestones are reached.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a few choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1 and are available in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that the crests can only be purchased for gear with a certain rank. Each rank comes with an upgrade path that is different. The most basic and straightforward upgrade process costs just 15 crests while the most complicated may require as many as 20 crests based on the type of equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through completing content of the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons of any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for endgame gear. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader for the item like Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and routes.

Using these new currencies isn't too complicated however, the system introduces some modifications to the upgrade process. For example, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to get their gear up to the highest level possible on all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another significant modification is that crests have one purpose, so it's important to use them wisely. For instance it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the best equipment available and keep Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan on making. This is particularly true for items like trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character, that will be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
