Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop in the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would alter our perception of avian intelligence. In 2007 when he passed away, Alex was one of the most well-known talking birds around the world, appearing on TV shows and in scientific reports.
