A robot vacuum will keep floors clean enough to reduce the frequency at which you have to manually vacuum. Select a vacuum with good navigation, can clean stairs and corners, and that has a large bin that needs to be emptying every so often.

There are models that can mop and charge themselves, a feature that may be beneficial for those with children or pets. The top performers in our tests also have decent obstacle avoidance.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its sibling, the i3 EVO, are identical robots that differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying features. This makes the i3+ a great option for those looking for a hands-off, fully automated cleaning experience but don't mind having to empty their dust bin manually when it fills up.

Both robots excel at picking up surface debris off carpets and hard floors, and they are very good at maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. However unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots that we test, the i3+ doesn't have a feature for avoiding obstacles and therefore it could get stuck on things such as socks or power cords, and it can have difficulty navigating across surface transitions, such as from hardwood to rug.

iRobot suggests cleaning the area around the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other items it might come across. It's also recommended to keep the bin and filter clear so they aren't clogged by dirt. When the i3+ EVO’s internal bin is empty or the battery is depleted, it returns to the docking station and automatically emptys the dirt into the docking station's external dustbin. It then continues cleaning from where it began. The i3+ EVO's battery can last for approximately an hour and a half of continuous use, and it takes about three hours to recharge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and comes with the most recent features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and the most crucial feature of all -- it has self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the most important sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba I7+ can make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot with voice or through the app.

In our tests, the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our runner-up, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it picked up large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces types including carpeting. Its main advantage over the eufy, though the dust bin is self-emptying that eliminates a major cause of maintenance and lowers the cost of maintenance.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We utilized these services to instruct the robot on how to start or stop cleaning sessions and also to move around the room and to vacuum a particular area. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward through the iRobot Home app. Once connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car in a world of cordless vacuums that feel like minivans and buses. It is powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered with a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that can provide power that is not fading for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system traps allergens, then releases fresh air into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets and collect large crumbs or fine dust. It comes with three suction modes to suit the task being performed. It quickly switches from handheld vacuum to floor vacuum, and then back to floor.

This model comes with a dock which charges the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also provides the ability to connect two attachments and an wand. This is a huge improvement over previous Dysons that require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's main drawback is its short running time. As CR's tests show, its marketing claims of up to 60 minutes are misleading. This is a standard battery-powered cordless vacuum's running time. It's enough time to vacuum the average-sized home however, it's not enough time to get into every corner. (A second run usually works). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and top rated robot vacuum more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models and its ability to vacuum is significantly better for carpet floors with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic robot vacuum that's a great option for those who don't have lots of money to invest in a robot floor cleaner. It was able to pick up the majority of types of debris and sizes in our testing and often went over the same area several times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach corners and edges of walls.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it's not equipped with the mapping capability of more advanced models like our top choices, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. It is prone to getting stuck on phone cords or low furniture and will often run out of power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 because it has less parts that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, incurs lower recurring cost and has more advanced automation capabilities and is better able to maneuver its own. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery longevity than the Roomba 694. It also comes with physical boundaries and can be controlled by the voice assistant on your smartphone. It is also more robust, has a larger motor, and is more effective on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name that is found on all kinds of electronic gadgets for your home It's no surprise that they're one of the most reputable robotic floor scrubber vacuum and mop makers. Their Jet Bot AI+ is packed with cutting-edge onboard technology to aid in navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app provides a range of options to customize your robotic cleaner. This includes virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior modifications docking frequency settings, and much more. It's simple to comprehend and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests during our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It cleaned up 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). However, it did not do particularly well in avoiding larger objects, like cords and socks which was a disappointment. It's also more expensive than some of the other models we tried and could be a deal-breaker for certain shoppers.

The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that you can access through the app, and you can also set up a live streaming from the robot's cleaning station. This feature lets you check in on pets or kids when you're away from home. The filter and dustbin can be washed to make cleanup quick and easy. Black and Decker robots have been designed specifically for hard flooring. The robots come with an extra-wide cleaning path, and dust bins that are 2X larger than the competition. The POWERSERIES model also comes with AutoSense, which automatically adjusts the power level according to whether it's picking up dirt on the surface or embedded dirt. The vacuum also comes with an app that lets you to view the virtual map, manage functions, and set schedules. You can also monitor the vacuum's status and send it to the dock for charging with the click of a button. The app lets you customize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum to discern where it is focusing or if it's stuck.

The app makes it possible to steer the robot manually when needed. For example my living room rug has a darkly colored border that has a tendency to make it difficult for other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL, however continued to travel across the border without registering the edge. The ability to program a cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving benefit.
