Lolita’s Personality

They require at least 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as hiking, local eateries and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but they are also a great pet for children.

The birds can be quite loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can make ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which could be a problem in apartments and condos or near young children who may be frightened by their noise.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are hard to differentiate. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member and plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. Lolita's Diet

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. The plans were not enough to save the beloved whale that died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney issue.
