Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots, also referred as bassinets or co-sleepers are designed to let parents sleep close to their babies at night, without the risk of SIDS. However they are only suggested for use until 6 months when your baby is required to move into a cot or moses basket.

Size

Height

When selecting a bedside crib and travel cot crib, choose one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which has won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket and comes with an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's a bit bigger than the other bedside cribs we looked at, but it folds flat into its travel bag, so it is relatively compact when not in use.

It is a fantastic design that is extremely maneuverable and is extremely durable. Safety

The main safety aspect of a large bedside cot is that it is able to be adjusted or moved to allow parents to reach their child when they need to feed them, soothe them or change their nappy. This means that it's ideal for mothers who still be recovering from a C-section. Find a model that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button, so you can easily lift your baby up without needing to get out of bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and more mobile. You'll also want to not add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, such as pillows and duvets, which could cause babies to become overheated.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing parts (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside rocking crib sleepers. For instance, these products would have to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC found, however that these requirements weren't practical or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped between a bedside rail and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside crib travel cot sleepers which can be converted to different modes like bassinets and play yards. A number of commenters suggested that the CPSC add an alternative clause to the proposed rule for multi-use bedside sleepers that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that can be removed. The attachment can be permanently fixed or disconnected when the product's not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is examining these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November 2021.
