Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet shop located on the Northwest Side. She began an investigation lasting 30 years that would change our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Alex's research challenged the common belief birds could only imitate human language without understanding meaning.

What is Alex?

Alex also understood the meaning behind words, something that is not typical for birds. When he was able to hear "grape" it was clear that it was not a plant but a fruit. Dr. Pepperberg taught Alex words in a way that made him understand them. She and a colleague would play the roles of teacher and student. Alex observed and listened. When he heard the correct pronunciation and meaning of the word and was rewarded with the object that went along with it.

Another fascinating aspect of the method she taught Alex was that she taught him the meanings behind words, not just the sounds. This was an innovative method because pet parrots generally only learn words to enhance their novelty. The owners don't care about what they say when they use a certain word. Alex, on the other hand, meant exactly what he said when used a particular word.

Some scientists believe it is not fair to compare Alex with humans when it comes to intelligence. Her study of him for thirty years revolutionized the theories of animal cognition and communication. She credited Alex for teaching her to employ the model, which proved effective in other animals and children with learning disabilities.

After her collaboration with him, Dr. Pepperberg went on to conduct studies with other parrots, Alex the African Grey Parrot including Wart and Griffin. She is a professor now at the University of Washington, where she continues her pioneering research with birds.

What was Alex's intelligence like?

He taught people that you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it. He believed that if you do not care what others think of you, you can achieve excellence.

Throughout his journey Chris/Alex was faced with a lot of difficulties. He was confronted with the loss of his father, financial difficulties and hardship. He was capable of overcoming all these obstacles by his sheer will and perseverance. He never gave up his dream of becoming an accomplished mountain climber. He did not give up on his ambition to become an mountain climber.

Even after his passing, he continues to inspire people all over the world. Free Solo is a film about Alex and his incredible achievements in climbing. This film has received great critical acclaim, and is regarded as one of the greatest documentaries ever made. It has also received numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2019.

In addition to his work with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues in bird intelligence. Alex could sing more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions and could count objects up to six, and demonstrate math skills that were quite advanced for birds at the time.

He was also able to communicate with other animals by using sign language, and he had a solid grasp of grammar. He employed a method of training known as "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they were trying to teach it. The trainers would switch places frequently so that the bird was in a position to interact with both of them and receive praise and attention from each.

Alex was named as a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able achieve many things in his lifetime due to his strength of character and his desire to live life to his own terms.
