item upgrader upgrades provide players with the ability to upgrade their equipment that they already own. This can be done by any upgrader of items NPC.

Generally upgrades increase an items main stat and can give it extra benefits, based on the item type. Examples include Whistan's shield for FB sorcs and Goldwrap for caster builds.

Armour

Link's armor is a key factor in keeping him safe from harm. Although it cannot be upgraded like weapons, it is possible to enhance its defence capabilities in a variety of ways.

Armour is designed to safeguard animals and people from injury or harm, whether it's from a direct physical attack or from a variety of activity or environmental hazards. They are typically marked by the blue triangle or gold circle symbol. They are available in large numbers as you progress. A magical item upgrading may grant them invisibility or make them invisible for everyone except the chosen person.

Utility Items

Utility items are those that do not fall under the categories of Armor, Clothing or Weapons and have various capabilities. Unlike Armor and Weapons they are not a single utility item that will be in conflict with the other. Most utility items have a passive effect which the player can activate when using them. However, some have additional abilities which are activated by pressing a button or triggering a skill.

The Flashlight is the most popular utility item Upgrade. It illuminates the area around it. Other utilities include the Helicopter Hat and Rocket Boots, which allow the player to be floating in the air while moving and the Jetpack, which allows players to accelerate in any direction while on the ground. In the Engineering section you can create instantly a variety of utilitarian items, whereas others are available only through research projects or experimental projects on the Proving Ground.

In addition to the items available in the normal inventory, players can also unlock additional powerful utility items by purchasing them from the Atomic Shop and also from seasonal Scoreboard rewards (such as the Shadow Goggles). Some of these items are upgradeable to make them more effective.

Most utility items give players an advantage in navigation or enhance the ability to fight. Sharpening stones, created by the Weaponsmith can boost power and Ferocity. Maintenance Oils, crafted by a Huntsman, increase Concentration and healing power. Other utility items can be utilized by players to increase Damage or Condition Damage.

All XCOM soldiers can be equipped with a useful item at the beginning of the campaign, and an additional slot can be obtained by acquiring certain types of armor or by completing engineering, research or experimental projects in the Proving Ground. In the Alien Hunters downloadable content, additional slots are available by equipping the Grenade Launcher. This permits the player to make use of an Smoke Grenade or Bomb while an offensive grenade remains in the main slot.
