Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet store located on the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would change our understanding of the intelligence of birds. Her research on Alex disproved the belief that birds can only imitate human language, but not understand the meaning.

Up until his death in 2007, Alex was one of the most famous talking birds around the world, appearing on television shows and in scientific reports.

In his lifetime, Alex learned over 150 words and could identify colors, shapes materials, and the sizes of objects. He also knew the meanings behind words, a feat which was uncommon for birds. For example, when it came across the word "grape" it would be clear that it was a fruit, not an vegetable. This was due to the method that Dr. Pepperberg taught him words. She along with a colleague would take on the role of teacher and student. Alex observed and listened. He was rewarded for correct pronunciation and definition by receiving the object that was associated with the word.
