WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the item level by +3. Each upgrade item also increases an unspecified substat.

The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value as long as it meets low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or has a high stat variance (like Eth titan weapons). The latter are less valuable from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade items gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any kind of armor or weapons. However, the item used to upgrade item will be consumed for the duration of time and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended to visit the upgrader once every few weeks, to keep your equipment up to date.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current item level upgrade level of the equipment being upgraded, but will always be less expensive than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that can be used to upgrade weapons and tools, armor and accessories. They can be purchased from item upgraders NPCs for a variety of currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased it can be applied to any weapon or tool using a button, which displays an image of the item at the next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the item slot, and the current level of the item. For instance weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Some upgrades offer a discount on the Flightstones. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain level, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of the two currency types.

Item upgraders can be found in many places on the main island and some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of getting a new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades require a variety of means which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system was altered a bit, with several new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less even if they are part of a different gear set.

The amount of Valorstones required to upgrade is reduced and the discount is account-wide. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests required for item level upgrade upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain achievement milestones.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a variety of choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are used for specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests are only able to be spent on equipment of a particular rank, and each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and most straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the most complicated may require as many as 20 crests based on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that means walking around and doing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons of all difficulty for items of higher tier, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. Crests can be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the upgrade process. For example, once an item upgrader mod reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to get their gear up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters, rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests wisely, as they are only used for one purpose. For instance it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests with the best equipment available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you're planning to create. This is particularly applicable to items like rings and trinkets that occupy several slots. The discount on the account will only apply when all the slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
