In addition to his work with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also set the standard for new avenues in avian intelligence. He could perform more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions and was able to count objects up to six, and demonstrated math skills that were incredibly advanced for an avian at the time.

He was also able to communicate with other animals by using sign language, and also had a good grasp of grammar. He utilized a method of teaching known as "rival model" which included two trainers who showed the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers would change their positions frequently so that the bird was capable of interacting with both trainers and receive rewards and attention from each of them.

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was given the title of National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. Alex was able accomplish so many things throughout his life due to his strength of character and desire to live his life to the fullest.
