The latest model from iRobot is also the most intelligent. It has advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's the only robot vacuum/mop that scored 100% in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system and best robot hoover multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station, and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with a simple mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that it's still quite a noisy unit that could be a problem if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, but it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and look better. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and some additional cost, this is a very efficient two-in-one device that should satisfy most people.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features that let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaner like Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and refills the water tank, as well as washes and dry mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive competitors. The RX3 is more sophisticated than the price suggests. It is a great job cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the mop cleaners with robots that vacuum and mop that we've tested. It's also extremely self-sufficient, with a fully-featured app, and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through an initial mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to create an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for better performance.
