Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor, on a plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who connect with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild.
