The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die.
