Evolution Korea

For a long time the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists in fear that it could boost the credibility of the group. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that discuss evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how individuals with advantageous traits are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. Over time, this differential reproduction could result in the creation of completely new species.

The term "evolution", which comes from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. Over time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of completely new physical or biological traits in the same population. Natural selection is the main force behind the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the increase in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial in spite of the fact that it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They argue that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their fight to remove evolution from textbooks for high school, including the removal of any references to the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestor of birds.

This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. Eventually these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were all created at the same time and that they grew slowly afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. Its mission, it states is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an image of students as being negative. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The causes are not evident, but they could be due to religion or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved many things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught until today.

On August 6-7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
