They are recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby bedside cot will be ready to transition to the bed.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, was awed by the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be used throughout the house. It also comes with an option to rock manually. It was simple to put together and it came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They are less than. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However cots are generally used by children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard that can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. If you'd like your child (or children) to be able to sleep in a larger cot, it's a good idea to choose the larger one.

Jasmine, an MFM mum who tested the product at home, was pleased that it was a bit bigger than the typical Moses basket, but not too big for the baby's room. She says it's easy to lift her baby in and out for feeding or soothing, and that the quality is excellent, compared with many she's seen that are flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product it's a drop-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also comes with an incline for reflux and a machine washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. Contrary to some International or European cot brands, the Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase another mattress as your baby grows. However, it does require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.

Height

When selecting a cot for the bed be sure to choose one that can be raised to a level that is comfortable for you when feeding the baby. It must also be lowered out of the way, so you can lift up your baby to feed them at night or comfort him. This feature is especially useful when you are recovering from a C Section. For example, the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted up to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is how low you want the cot's base to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their children out of standard Moses baskets at the smallest height, other mums prefer a higher base to give them more stability. One of our mum testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It is a collapsible side which you can use to push of a button.

Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device is only suitable when your baby is able to hold his head up without assistance, which is usually around 6 months. This is due to the danger of suffocation. It is also important to remember that if you opt for a bedside or bassinet which can be converted into a cot it is necessary to begin removing the sides once your child is ready for this to ensure that they don't climb out or fall out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of cribs for bedside use, ranging from basic to extravagant. Some of the more extravagant options include features such as an integrated light or a center of calm that plays music and sound and has two levels to help soothe your baby back to sleep or the swivelling footrest, which allows you to reach your child to feed them. Certain models can be converted into the toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.

For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air that won Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to pick up your baby and transfer them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This is great for mothers who are recovering from Caesareans or who have to stay in bed for long periods of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying it was easy to use and made her baby much more manageable - especially after her c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for large bedside cot the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It has a machine-washable liner, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's slightly larger than the other cribs that we've tested but it folds flat into its bag for travel, so it's relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside cot bed crib describing how it was designed with parents and babies in mind. 'It has an excellent design that is very simple to operate and is super-sturdy. Its swivelling base is brilliant as it means you can move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be let down to make access easier especially for new mothers who are recovering from their C-sections', she said.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is that it can be easily moved up or down so that parents can reach their child to feed or comfort him or their diaper. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from an c-section. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side with the push of a button so you can easily lift your baby up without having to get out of bed. This is essential, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You should also avoid adding anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation, or injury, including pillows and duvets. These could cause babies to become overheated.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product issues, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) Fabric-side enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC considered the possibility of imposing additional requirements for sleepers in bed, such as the requirement that they meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at least meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. However, the CPSC determined that these requirements are not feasible or effective to reduce the number of incidents in which infants were entrapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the incidents reported in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers that can be transformed into different types of furniture, like bassinets or play yards. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use amazon bedside cot beds to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets by using an attachment that is removable and can be permanently connected or disconnected when the product is not being used as the bassinet.

The CPSC is currently examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on sleepers who are bedside. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to be released in November 2021.
