Evolution Korea

Until recently, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so might increase the credibility of the movement. Silence is no longer a viable option.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages survive and reproduce more than those with less favorable traits. This differential reproduction can, over time, lead to the creation and evolution of new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of survival or conceiving offspring. As time passes this genetic variation can cause the emergence of completely new physical or biological functions in a population. The shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. However other changes that are not genetic, such as the increase in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered examples of evolution since they are not inherited by future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments however, creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. OECs are not as well-known however they're just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they will remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of biology students teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The reasons aren't evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences that had a creationist perspective. This led to an interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
