3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With an elegant, circular design that looks more like a regular Roomba than the competition's compact models This mop and robot vacuum is one of the most attractive looking models in our reviews. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It has advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score a perfect 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a combination modern sensors, including a restructured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted an industry-leading suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with an easy mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in the mornings before work, or in the evening when you're trying to sleep.

If you have a larger home, it is worth selecting a robot that comes with the option of cleaning zones or spots. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home needs to be cleaned using the app or voice control. If you have a lot of furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. For robot mop families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be very useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would think from its price. It's a pro at cleaning, removing 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion, which is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot app is designed to guide you through a mapping run, which gathers information on your floorplan, as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map.
