Evolution Korea

Up until recently, the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credibility. Silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been campaigning to get rid of textbooks that describe evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is just one aspect of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environments and this can lead to changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes could over generations result in the development of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. In time, this disparity in reproduction could lead to the development of entirely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this view. While these are troubling changes, it's important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. This support is based on many different reasons. Scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of medicines or developing new medicines, while others are driven by a desire to improve animal and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, while still others have a deep faith in God and seek to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think about creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they will remove the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this campaign. STR has won its first victory by taking away instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The next goal is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of biology students teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences that has an orthodox creationist perspective, which attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
