Evolution Korea

For a long time the scientific community in Korea has been hesitant to engage with the creationists, fearing that it could boost the credibility of the group. The silence is no longer a viable option.

The STR has been campaigning to eliminate content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one example of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings and this can lead to changes in genes or even complete genomes. These changes can, over generations lead to the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process through which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with disadvantageous characteristics. In time, this disparity in reproduction may lead to the development of completely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 opposed this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the idea that species are evolving into other species in a gradual and predictable way.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. As time passes, this genetic variability can lead to the emergence of completely new physical or biological functions in the population. Such a shift in gene frequency is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary change. However non-genetic changes like the growth in the muscle mass as a result of exercise or diet cannot be considered examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from textbooks for high school which includes the removal of any references to the evolutionary roots of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestral bird's parent.

This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." In this view, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. Then, these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things during a single event, known as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created at the same time and that they developed gradually afterward. They deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education, the American Anthropological Association, 에볼루션 바카라 and the Geological Society of America. STR has won its first victory in eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The causes aren't clear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the United States.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its seminars and lectures. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.

On August 6-7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
