WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. A random additional substat is also boosted alongside every upgrade.

Upgraded gear generally sees greater value for trade regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or a very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by providing the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. However, the item used for the upgrade will be consumed forever and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to the enchantments.

The upgrader is located in all major cities and can be visited at any time to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the item level upgrade level, however they'll always be less expensive than purchasing new gear. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest up to ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items which can be used to upgrade weapons tools, armor, and accessories. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades to item level upgrade owners for various currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item. For example weapons cost more than gloves, bracers or bracers. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. Once an Item Upgrade has been upgraded to a certain level it is able to be degraded and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currency types.

Upgraders for items can be found at many locations on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases when more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to facilitate upgrades must be acquired through a variety of means, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

Crests

When it comes to upgrading gear in WoW, players have a couple of options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more specialized and are used for specific item upgrader mod level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1, and come in four ranks.

The first thing to remember is that Crests are only available to equipment of a certain rank. Each rank comes with distinct upgrade paths. The most basic and straightforward upgrade path costs 15 crests, while the most complex may require as many as 20 crests depending on the type of equipment being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by completing content of the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities to get lower-tier gear, dungeons or raids of all difficulty for items of higher tier or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons to obtain endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an upgrader NPC, such as Cuzolth in Dornogal, or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade routes and steps.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it does bring some modifications to the upgrade process. When a piece has reached the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer or Adventurer) it no longer requires Flightstones. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible level on all of their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

Another important modification is that crests have one use, so it's important to use them properly. For instance it's best to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the best equipment available and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan on making. This is particularly applicable to trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which will only be able to avail the discount for all accounts when all of the slots are filled with top-quality gear.
